Tamba Textile

Designated as a National Intangible Cultural Asset/ Hyogo Prefecture Traditional Craft

Tamba Textile is a traditional fabric, woven in Aogaki region in Tamba City and known as Tamba-nuno, that dates back to the end of the Edo period (1603-1867). The rapid development of machine-woven cotton textiles in the 1890s led to a decline in production. Around 1920, folk art activist Muneyoshi Yanagi and Rokuro Uemura revived the craft, and it has been recognized as a unique craft know-how preserved in the region ever since.

Step1 Spinning
After cotton ginning the weaver uses a wheel to wind the yarn into a spindle shape. Because this is done by hand, in contrast to machine spinning, it results in an uneven thickness of the yarn, which gives the cloth its distinctive texture.
Step2 Dyeing
The dyeing is sourced from local plants nurtured by the rich nature of Tamba, such as chestnut tree bark and kobuna glass (Arthraxon hispidus).
Step3 Weaving
By using a loom, the weft yarns are woven back and forth between the warp yarns. Although this is a tedious process (that only advances the width of one thread at a time), all Tamba textiles are made by hand weaving.

TambaTextile is handmade by artisans. The patterns may vary depending on the season.

Our Story

TANIMIZU Board Processing Technical Co., Ltd.

Tamba City is where our company was founded in 1961. The city, surrounded by lush mountains, is located in central of Hyogo Prefecture approximately 50 miles from urban areas. There are times when it seems as if our company is surrounded not only by mountains but also the grandeur and energy that has existed since ancient times in the heart of the land of Tamba. Despite the scenic landscape, our rural city is suffering from a declining population.

We strive to provide a worthwhile workplace to solve this problem for local people, especially younger generations, so that they are willing to stay here, or come back after graduation. Our ambition is continuous improvement as a solutions-oriented company. Our core expertise is composite construction materials.

A soundproof music practice room called “panam room” is our iconic product. Our most recent production is a composite wall combined with insulation and steel sheet used for prefabricated housing units. These products reflect our vision: “We will deliver a serene, secure, and relaxing space for dwellers surrounded by their favorite people, things, and sounds.”
